Sports Highlights: April 13-24


Sixteen boys volleyball teams are competing in the Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions at Santa Barbara High on Friday and Saturday, April 13-14. Two matches at a time are being played at J.R. Richards Gym. The quarterfinals begin at 6 p.m. Friday. Saturday’s matches start at 9 a.m. The championship semifinals are scheduled at 10:45 a.m., and the final at 6:15 p.m. The top two seeded teams are Mira Costa and Esperanza.

The Santa Barbara Breakers, off to a fast-breaking start in the West Coast Basketball League, will host the Hollywood Shooting Stars on Saturday night at San Marcos High. UCSB seniors James Nunnally (21 points, 8 rebounds) and Greg Somogyi (10 points, 10 rebounds) make their debuts with the Breakers in a 113-105 victory over the Los Angeles Advantage last week. Former Golden State Warrior/USC player Jerry Dupree scored 31 points, and Tim Taylor tallied 23.
