Boy Scouts Host Annual Scout Skills Competition
Patrols of Scouts competed on Saturday in eleven different basic skills events. Some of these events were rifle shooting, orienteering, knot tying, plant and animal identification, and team building exercises. One of the most popular events at this year’s Camporee was Fire Starting. Scouts had to start a fire without using matches and then sustain that fire to cook three kernels of popcorn in a pan. At each activity an adult volunteer leader judged the patrols on participation, knowledge, teamwork, communication, planning, patrol spirit, patrol leaders ability to lead, and completing the task. The Camporee ended with a campfire full of songs, skits, and presentations of ribbons. The campfire was topped off with a special retirement of four United States of America flags.

Carmel.
About the Los Padres Council
The Los Padres Council has been serving families in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties since 1917. The council is divided into five districts, with the South Coast District serving the southern section of Santa Barbara County. The council’s mission is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.
