Local Caitlin Racich Wins Pairs National Title in Sand Volleyball

A day after winning the inaugural team national championship in women’s sand volleyball, Pepperdine junior Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) won the national title in the pairs competition with teammate Summer Ross on Sunday in Gulf Shores, Ala., at the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships.

Racich and Ross had an incredible comeback in the championship match against Long Beach State’s Tara Roenicke and Caitlin Ledoux. The Waves were behind 14-11 in the third set and faced three match points, but ran off the next five points in a row to claim a 14-21, 21-15, 16-14 victory for the championship.

Prior to the final, the duo didn’t drop a set in their first three wins of the day. They beat Elyse Chubb and Lizzie Theefield of the College of Charleston, 21-9, 21-11, in the first round, Geena Urango and Sara Shaw of USC, 21-19, 21-8, in the quarterfinals, and Pepperdine teammates Kim Hill and Lilla Frederick, 21-9, 21-17, in the semifinals.

Both Racich and Ross were awarded All-American honors following Saturday’s team competition.
