Plucking Chicks as Usual

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

In 1928, the political candidates,

Quipped Henry IV to make their slogans great.

“A chicken in every pot!” yelled the Republicans.

“First I need my own pot,” responded the Dems.

Eighty-four years later an 86-year-old man

Has used his chicken feed to fuel the gay marriage ban.

Rife with ruffled feathers, Santa Barbarians comment.

Many hard-boiled characters voice their lament.

The over-easies say, “Just vote with your cash.”

Sunny-side-up folks sass, “Judging judgment seems brash.”

Like dumb clucks and bird brains the hen house clucked,

Chirped, pecked, and squawked until they all felt plucked.

Ongoing rooster games gave them much to crow about.

Chick-fil-A is going to move in and they can’t help but shout.

Protesting poultry - the rule of the roost -

Could be the perfect political spirit boost

Needed to hatch the egg of engaged democracy

And crush discrimination in the land of the free.

If only all had known Lemuel K. Washburn’s words,

Perhaps they would see this arguing really is for the birds.

He said that religion is no more the parent of morality

Than an incubator is a mother hatching chickens healthily.

Perhaps Chick-fil-A can only walk on eggshells for so long,

Before learning if breaking eggs to make omelets is wrong.

Inspired by comments found here and here.
