City College will host three public forums to update the community on plans for the reorganization of the Continuing Education Division. They will be held on Thursday, August 30 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Wake Center; Wednesday, September 5 (with Spanish translation) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Schott Center; and Thursday, September 6 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Schott Center. Administration will suggest that enrichment courses be fee-based and that the rest of the courses merge into the Educational Programs Division.

Did anyone go to the first one? Do we still have an adult ed program for people who can't afford fees?

For anyone who wants to see their favorite adult ed courses offered, it can't hurt to send a polite letter to the new President, Dr. Lori Gaskin, to let her know how important these courses are to us. We understand that SBCC can't continue to offer courses almost free, as they had been. Most other adult ed programs across the country cost money. $200 is not unusual, I've learned. So we have to get used to that idea and seriously try to get scholarship money, so those who can't afford $200 can also participate. Now get that letter off.

I'm sure the new SBCC president will know what side her bread is buttered on, even if she has to throw practical job training and post-secondary education under the bus to pander to this powerful constituency.

In Fastman's Aug. 22nd article ('Changes Brewing...') there was a lively exchange in the thread... DrDan93101 (this writer) wrote, "The mission of the junior colleges is to prepare young people for UC and other 4-year colleges. It's way down on their priority list to have to take care of all these retired folks, many affluent ones have recently moved here as EastBeach notes...so, the clue is the much higher priority is those seeking decent jobs in this suffering economy"...
There simply has to be less SBCC money going to Adult Ed, and Shira is completely correct. All we older folk can do is write nice letters to Pres. Gaskin, and look for funding to help those oldsters who want/need/deserve continuing education, SezMe's "lifelong learning".
But all the community colleges in Calif., among our very greatest resources, are in financial trouble and they absolutely must devote their precious resources to educating the young... both for UC and professional careers, but also for real jobs in the real economy... yes, Botany, there has to be some practical job training ahead of stimulating the graybacks.
Chancellor Jack Scott is telling CC leaders to proceed with this reallocation back to the core mission of the community colleges (formerly called JCs). These remain a true bargain still.

SBCC is NOT a junior college, it’s a community college. Junior colleges are two-year institutions offering vocational and professional programs, and academic courses for university transfer. A community college is a two-year post-secondary educational institute that’s located in an area of the city or town to meet the needs of specific communities. CC’s offer vocational degree programs that train students for careers without attaining a higher degree, as well as prepare students who want to pursue a bachelor's degree and graduate school. CC’s also offer continuing education classes that a person can take who are not interested in pursuing a degree, but want to learn a new skill, be better citizens or improve their life. We are lucky that we have SBCC right in the heart of our community, serving the needs of the residents who live here, in addition to the many who travel from outside the area to attend the college..
