School Library Monthly sets out a clear path forward in the January 2013 Special Issue: CCSS and Inquiry, complete with a four-page pull-out matrix designed to clarify how to progress from standards and concepts to actually implementing new practices.

The matrix contributor, Judy Moreillon, envisions a unique and vital role for school librarians, stating ” … it is imperative that school librarians get ‘out in front’ and be part of the decision-making team” on how Common Core and other standards are implemented (SLM, January 2013). The matrix, plus additional articles from important thought leaders on the topic of inquiry learning, will empower school librarians to respond to the challenges of working with both students and teachers to achieve CCSS.

SLM Managing Editor, Deborah Levitov, conceived of the special issue in response to the clamor from school librarians for practical assistance with implementing multiple standards. Levitov explains that “SLM focuses each issue on helping readers be the best instructional and informational leaders in their school. With the push toward Common Core Standards, it is clear that school librarian professionals need to assemble the puzzle that includes a myriad of standards and align them with inquiry learning as well as solid tenets for reading comprehension and learning application.”

The SLM Special January Issue: CCS and Inquiry responds to the need for the school librarian to understand—and help others understand—the natural connections between CCSS, AASL Standards, Inquiry, Reading Comprehension, and Learning Strategies. Everyone committed to raising student achievement by implementing Common Core standards and inquiry-based learning will turn to these pages again and again.
