Harding University Partnership School’s Principal Kingston Accepts Carpinteria Position

Dr. Sally Kingston, Harding University Partnership School principal, has been selected to serve as Carpinteria Unified School District’s director of College-bound Programs. She will begin her new position on May 7, 2012.

Superintendent Dave Cash said, “I am sad to lose such a dedicated, hard-working principal from our district. Dr. Kingston has put her heart and soul into making Harding a great place to learn. She will be missed by us all.”

The Santa Barbara Unified School District is currently recruiting and advertising for the position. The superintendent will be meeting with staff and parents to listen to their views on the qualities and characteristics they wish to see in the next principal.

Once applications for the position are received, they will be screened and an interview committee will include two parents, two teachers, two classified staff, elementary principals, and district office administrators. The final candidate will be recommended to the board of education for approval.

Former Peabody Charter School principal Pat Morales will serve as Harding’s interim principal until a new principal is selected. Jane Santos-Sweeney will continue her work in helping with the Harding Early Years Program.

Dr. Kingston began her assignment at Harding on August 22, 2005. Prior to serving as principal at Harding, she served as a teacher at Peabody Charter School, administrator at La Cumbre Junior High School, assistant principal at La Colina Junior High, and principal of Franklin Primary Elementary School, as well as three years as principal at Roosevelt Elementary School.

Teens Bring Awareness to the Question “What Is Love?”

The Santa Barbara Arts Commission and Domestic Violence Solutions held the 2nd Annual What is LOVE poster contest and several of our district’s artists and poets submitted award-winning posters to a contest focused on dating violence.

There were 144 original submissions, all from the Santa Barbara Unified School District; 26 students were selected as finalists. The winning designs were awarded to:

  • 1st Place – Alec Larson, Santa Barbara High School, 11th grade
  • 2nd Place – Cassandra Bustos, San Marcos High School, 11th grade
  • 3rd Place – Veronika Jacinto, San Marcos High School, 9th grade
  • 3rd Place – Claire Lowe, Santa Barbara High School, 11th grade
  • Teen Choice Award – Chase Jarosz, Santa Barbara High School, 11th grade

Christy Haynes, director of prevention education for Domestic Violence Solutions, said, “This poster contest has proven to be very effective. After we started distributing last year’s winning poster design, within three months of the poster’s release we saw a 300 percent increase in teens calling our confidential hotline to ask for help. It shows that this poster contest is perhaps one of the most effective ways to bring awareness to this silent epidemic.”
