TOP SPORTING EVENTS: FEBRUARY 22-MARCH 5

Only three high school teams remain in the CIF winter sports playoffs, and two of them are playing today (Wed., Feb. 22). The Dos Pueblos Chargers host Long Beach Poly in the Division 2 girls soccer second round, and Providence Hall plays L.A. Adventist in the Division 6 girls basketball quarterfinals at Westmont College.

The other postseason contestant, Cate School’s top-ranked boys soccer team, travels to Don Bosco Tech in the Division 7 quarterfinals Thursday.

UCSB’s Big West basketball showdown at Long Beach State tonight will be televised on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. Long Beach (12-0 in the conference, 19-7 overall) is closing in on the regular season title. The 49ers are undefeated (9-0) on their home court at the Pyramid. The Gauchos (9-3, 15-8) are tied for second place with Cal State Fullerton.

Orlando Johnson sits in third place on UCSB’s career scoring list with 1,674 points, and he is within striking distance of the top two, Carrick DeHart (1,687) and Alex Harris (1,696). Johnson is the Big West scoring leader, averaging 20 points a game.

The Gaucho women play their final regular-season home games Thursday and Saturday, while Saturday night the men will host Cal Poly (8 p.m., ESPNU) and play two more home games next week.

Westmont College’s women, ranked No. 5 in the NAIA, clinched their first Golden State Athletic Conference regular season championship with an 86-66 victory over Fresno Pacific on Tuesday. The Warriors will play a home game in the opening round of the GSAC Tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 29. The Warrior men, tied for second place, will find out their tournament seeding after Saturday’s game at Azusa Pacific.
