Goleta resident Brian Pipkin, 33, was arrested Friday afternoon for violently attacking a homeless man on an Isla Vista beach. According to the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department, a witness saw Pipkin punch and kick the 54-year-old transient near the beach access at Del Playa Drive and El Embarcadero Road. He allegedly picked up a rock and slammed it on the victim’s head.
Deputies found Pipkin a short time later at Pelican Park on the 6500 block of Del Playa and placed him in custody. The victim was transported to the hospital with multiple lacerations to his face. There is no known motive for the attack, a Sheriff’s spokesperson said.
Pipkin was booked into County Jail on charges of felony battery and assault with a deadly weapon. His bail is set at $50,000.
[Note: A Sheriff’s Department spokesperson said the injuries seen on Pipkin’s face in his booking photo existed before his arrest.]

An attack ON a transient is big news for the Indy. Multiple assaults BY transients on everyday citizens...cue the crickets.

Dogsand, you touch on a very interesting thing. It seems that if this were a simple unprovoked assault then Mr. Pipkin is guilty of assault.
But then there's those interesting markings on his face, they seem fresh & new, still wet, minimal scabbing. See where I'm going?
What if the transient that was "assaulted" by Mr. Pipkin initiated the assault?
I think the ONLY reason Mr. Pipkin is in the klink is because he left the scene of the altercation.
Had he stayed to clue the police in on what happened it could've been different.
But then there's that pesky rock thing. Yes, no doubt smashing a rock on someone's noggin is a vicious act.
Then there's the psychological reasoning that says there was a ton of anger there that had to be let out.
I think these 2 knew each other, a scuffle turned into a brawl & somebody got the crappy end of F=mA.
Some of the BUMS (not homeless) in IV are an annoyingly recalcitrant sort. Always have been.
They go around like the population owes them a living (which some already get in the form of SSDI) & harass people expecting no repercussion because alas, they're "salt of the Earth" & therefore a protected species.
So how'd that work out this time for the recipient of a harsh beating? Not so good.
I can tell you w/ 100% accuracy it wasn't the usual suspect Pirate, saw him waddling up Embarcadero Del Mar toward El Colegio @ ~1:30 am on Sunday morning after some students trying to hit them up for beer funds.
Maybe it was The Chief, who LOVES to confront & threaten people for spare change or his Papa Smurf looking sidekick w/ a penchant for trying to be a badass.
In any case, theere's more to this than meets the eye & yes, when the BUMS (not homeless) do attack or assault ordinary citizens it is no news because after all, ordinary citizens are supposed to care for themselves & are NOT a protected species. Only in CA or @ least SB, CA :) henry

Those fresh bruises were' probably from fighting with someone else... If he's bully enough to tune up the homeless, maybe he got a tune up in kind.

All the cheap talk and nothing to support dogsnsands initial claim (or implied claim) that the homeless regularly assault people, a claim which carries weight in dogsnsands pathetic world but dissipates quickly in a world of fact. A casual glance at the statistics will reveal that the opposite is true, in fact it's not uncommon to hear of homeless individuals being beaten to death by police-officers or started on fire by any bored weirdo or gangbanger that happens along the street. No, nothing approaching the truth, just a bunch of amateur forensic scientists excusing the behavior of a man who tried to bash someone's head in with a rock.
I wonder what the reaction would have been if the victim had been Moslem...or black...or gay.

Hey Wayne, sorry to pop your bubble there good buddy but nobody's excusing anybody's behaviors.
But as you CAN'T possibly see, there's MORE to this story than your limited capacity ALLOWS you to see. You don't need to be a forensic scientist to figure this out.
Tell you what, hang out w/ some of the "salt of the Earth" for a bit & tell us what you get out of it. You'd probably pull a "Pipkin" the 1st chance you got.
By the way, when I SARCASTICALLY use the term "salt of the Earth" I'm not talking about TRUE homeless, I'm talking about BUMS, such as those we got in IV.
But I do have to give you this: Most victims of violence against homeless ARE true homeless, not BUMS.
Why's that? Because they're usually defenseless, they're withdrawn & the services that should be there to protect & serve them have been wasted on BUMS.
Why do the BUMS get the services? Too easy: The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
If you're loud, obnoxious & threatening, the powers that be will do all they can to placate you to avoid more contact. This isn't working on a number of levels.
As for the victim being a muslim, black, gay or whatever, if they did something to provoke an attack then the actions of the "attacker" can be LEGALLY deemed as self defense, wouldn't you say? If the attack was unprovoked then it is assault.
Follow this story closely, you'll see a pattern here that is common within those circles :) henry

If someone beats me up and I track him down and bash him in the head with a rock (as you imply happened) it is NOT self-defense, indeed, it is illegal and, for those concerned with such things, it is immoral as well. So don't worry about bursting my bubble, Hank, you're not as sharp as you think.

Alright, let's try this again. Wayne, you're the not so sharp 1 here. I didn't "imply" that somebody tracked anybody down to beat them w/ a rock as well as calling that self defense, YOU MADE THAT UP.
Here's what I said, simplified for your lack of understanding & comprehension (@ least you have a good imagination):
1) While the attack on the transient using a rock as a weapon was violent, what is NOT to say that Mr. Pipkin was defending himself from an attack by the supposed victim? If this is the case then LEGALLY it is clearly self defense. After all, there are those wounds on his face that happened before the arrest, according to the report.
2) There's more to this case than meets the eye. These 2 had to have prior contact for things to get so "up close & personal" in nature.
3) The HUGE mistake Mr. Pipkin made, if he were defending himself, was to run from the scene of the altercation. This can be seen as an act of evasion & an admission of guilt.
4) If you know anything about IV then you'd know the location of Pelican Park is ~2 or 3 apartments away from where the actual altercation took place, not a far run by the suspect.
5) Speculation here, but what's not to say this is how it went down: Both combatants were hanging out, probably getting their drink or buzz on, something happened or was said, tempers flared, push came to shove & all hell broke loose.
6) The BUMS in IV are an agressive sort, this probably came to play in this case.
So again, why are you defending the "salt of the Earth" in such a manner? Are they exempt from being violent or criminal? There Wayne (& the Indy mods), my nice way of saying you're not that sharp by not looking @ the whole picture :) henry
