Plans to build a Target in Goleta near the corner of Los Carneros Way and Hollister Avenue underwent the first wave of architectural scrutiny on Tuesday, as the city’s Design Review Board listened to a presentation from the superstore’s reps, took in some public comments, and gave feedback on the project, which would knock down a number of buildings (including the Goleta Valley Athletic Club), realign some of the roads, and erect a nearly 170,000-square-foot two-story structure that would be vaulted over a parking lot underneath.
Among other concerns, board members suggested that Calle Koral would have to be widened as an access route, worried about too much branding built into the design, and encouraged the developers to consider better incorporation the existing mountain views. The only truly harsh critique came from board member Bob Wignot, who opined, “I don’t feel that we need you here in Goleta at this time.”

Who elected Bob Wingnut? Was he even elected? This is the same attitude that prevents us from having drive thru resturants in SB, and a good old Walmart in our area! Sorry Bob, not all of us are rich and can do our shopping at Macy's and Buy our groceries from Gelson's. Give us Target, or give us your resignation. Dammit!

Yeah, because we really need more drive-thru's causing traffic problems, and Walmart to peddle substandard foreign manufacturing. Stay classy, Santa Barbara.

I wonder if they plan on painting a big bullseye target on their roof (given their proximity to the airport, per this Wikipedia citation):

At least this time they want to put it IN Goleta. We can use the tax dollars, and it's WAY better than Walmart. Let SB shop in Goleta for a change! :)

I said it elsewhere and I'll say it here: it makes more sense to redevelop existing defunct commercial sites that don't have major circumstantial traffic problems, which the Hollister corridor and esp. the Storke-Hollister and Los Carneros-Hollister intersections have in spades, along with the Hwy. 101 interchanges at Storke-Glen Annie and Los Carneros, oh, and good old Fairview.
Historically, even in the days of 30¢-a-gallon gasoline, Goleta and its surroundings couldn't support a FedMart and a Disco, a FedMart and a Two Guys, two FedMarts, one FedMart, and now apparently K-Mart and Sears are having troubles because of Costco and on-line shopping. Even J.C. Penney folded, twice.
If there is to be a Target store, look for a site to redevelop that doesn't have an existing traffic mess surrounding it. I suggest a hard look at the closed car dealerships on Hitchcock. Yeah, State's a mess too, but not as bad as Hollister. Or, how about the Sears store in La Cumbre Plaza, which is a dead store still open?
