This specific project to benefit from this event is Sustainable Agriculture’s expansion into northern Sierra Leone. After a long bloody civil war, Sierra Leone has had a democratically elected government for ten years and now appears to be relatively stable. It is reported that the government is running the country for the benefit of the people unlike many other African countries. Despite this, the country remains one of the poorest in the world and it has one of the very worst child death rates, a key indicator of nutrition quality.

The Director of Sustainable Agriculture, Mozart Adevu, a UMC missionary, has visited the two districts where training will take place and finds that they are good candidates for the program. Namely, there is a lot of opportunity to improve their agricultural output, they want to be trained, and the government has indicated a willingness to provide some help. Mozart sees many specific areas where they can improve agricultural output and nutrition including Moringa trees and beekeeping.

They are ready, but funds are needed. Supporters can help the cause by coming to the feast and bringing family and friends. The last Mission fundraiser reached $10,000. UMC will likely not raise that from within the congregation; the only way to reach such a goal is to invite people outside the church! The luncheon will be from 11:30 am – 3:00 pm with multiple seatings. The food is generously provided by the Moiso family and their Via Maestra 42 Restaurant, so it will be good! The price is $20 for adults and $10 for children 10 and under. Additional donations are very welcome. Please RSVP by calling the church office at 963-3579.
