I recently lost something valuable to me. It was a dark brown leatherbound address book measuring 8 inches by 6 inches, and about 3 inches thick, which I’ve been carrying around for the last 20 years. It was crammed with addresses, coupons, lists, and recipes. Apparently, I set it down somewhere and I don’t remember where. Initially, I wasn’t too worried because all my contact information is on the first page, including a large “REWARD FOR RETURN” notation.

But three weeks later, I have gone back to every grocery store, every pharmacy, library, and place of business I’ve frequented in the past month – some of them twice. No one has my book.

I remember looking for something at Kinko’s a few years ago. What they had in their lost-and-found was amazing: tax materials, bank statements, beautifully colored original genealogy documents. If only someone would have taken a few minutes to check for the owner’s contact.

Merchants may think we “losers” remember where we left something, but I don’t. So I’m asking Santa Barbara merchants to check their lost-and-found items for contact information. Whoever lost those things was in your store shopping. Please try to return a favor.
