Both drivers involved in a head-on collision Sunday morning on Highway 101 — during which one of the motorists was traveling southbound in northbound lanes — were under the influence of alcohol, the CHP reports.
According to a press release issued Monday afternoon, CHP dispatchers began receiving calls of a wrong-way driver near Turnpike Road at around 2:20 a.m. Minutes later officers arrived at the scene of the wreck. They determined a 2011 Nissan Altima driven by 25-year-old Diana Villalobos was heading the wrong way down the highway at an unknown speed when it collided with a 1994 Lexus ES300 driven by 25-year-old Anna Fragosa.
Villalobos sustained a broken right ankle, fractured kneecaps, and multiple abrasions, the CHP report states. Fragosa sustained undisclosed injuries that were classified as non-life threatening. Both were transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and have since been released. Northbound 101 lanes were closed for approximately 50 minutes while crews worked to clear the scene.
“While at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital,” the report states, “officers noted an overwhelming odor of alcohol coming from both involved parties. Preliminary investigation revealed both drivers were under the influence of alcohol.” Villalobos was arrested for felony DUI, and Fragosa was arrested for misdemeanor DUI.

Back to arresting marijuana users and growers since they are the real danger out there on the streets.

Two drunk drivers, hey, let's open up some more bars! (Oh, sorry, I have to explain, this part is just sarcasm)

Bad enough, sad enough. But why, in all these reports, do they always list the models of cars; a 2011 Nissan Altima and a 1994 Lexus ES300? Why not telling the color? — Who cares? It has nothing to do with the story, the problem of drunk driving and what happened. Or would it make a difference if it were a 500SL Mercedes? People made big mistakes, people got injured — the model of the car is of no relevance. It doesn’t even make the story or reporting more interesting or appealing.

The five Ws in journalism could include the make and model. Could this information jog memories of witnesses who encountered the drivers before, during and after? Could be that the color information wasn't available.

I am saddened to admit that for the very first time I agree with DM.
Over the past 5 years there have been an awful lot of people driving the WRONG WAY ON 101. What the heck?

Actually, it's the 2 AM closing time that's at fault. If the bars stayed open 24 hours, these drunks wouldn't have to drive home at 2 AM.
Just kidding.

"...why, in all these reports, do they always list the models of cars...."
Maybe it's useful information, for those who want to drive under the influence of alcohol, and survive a head-on collision.

I agree that the 2am closing time is an issue. Suddenly there's this mad rush of drunks on the road.
I think the wrong way driver must've entered at Storke.

Nothing to be sad about Italiansurg; you, Don, Ken, Hank (who has informed me that he has been banned from posting on The Independent) myself, and many others are sick and tired of selfish drunks and the fact that so many businesses as well as local government entities enable this dangerous and at times deadly behavior.

Eventually Ken, eventually we'll all be able to coordinate our schedules and meet for dinner. I met his girlfriend Kim; great lady, we all had a good time. I'll try to shoot for the Saturday after this one.
