Chamber of Commerce President Steve Cushman announced his retirement on Tuesday. The chamber’s longest-serving president, Cushman returned to Santa Barbara — where he attended college and played baseball at UCSB — in 1988 to head up the business booster. On finding a replacement, Board Chair Janet Garufis said, “It will take however long it takes to get the best person for the job.” According to a press release, Cushman’s “most memorable Chamber experience was the planning and construction of Kids World Playground in Alameda Park in 1994.”

Enjoy your retirement Steve. You've earned it. Thanks for being on the forefront of the downtown revitalization. I remember back in the 80's all the vacant store fronts on State St. We do have a good business core.

I have been in town for nearly 25 years. I went to this fellow with problems I had with the City of Santa Barbara during construction. He went to bat for me. The problem was fixed. He was very helpful. A couple of years alter I had the SB police department regularly closing our street for events. I tried to get them to stop...no luck. I went to Cushman and that was the last time the PD closed my street. Every time I have had a problem since then, where the Chamber could be effective...he handled it. Quickly, efficiently and without any fuss. My guess is it will be impossible to replace him. He made countless introductions at his Chamber mixers. It is a sad day for the businesses in town. Those of us with business licenses will miss him.
