Since 1995, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation has made an annual series of awards to encourage poets to explore and illuminate positive visions of peace and the human spirit. The poetry awards are offered in three categories: Adult; Youth 13 to 18; and Youth 12 and Under.

In the Adult category, Carla S. Schick was awarded First Place for her poem “Their Grandmother’s Palm (Pantoum for Palestine).” Ms. Schick lives in Oakland, California and is a high school math teacher. In 2003, she received an Honorable Mention in the Barbara Mandigo Kelly Peace Poetry Awards.

An Honorable Mention in the Adult category was awarded to Allison Thorpe, from Edmonton, Kentucky, for her poem “To The Boy I Remember, The Man I Came To Love.”

A second Honorable Mention in the Adult category was awarded to Lizette M. Tucker for “A Chance Meeting at the Edge of the Namib Desert.” Ms. Tucker lives in Bellevue, Washington.

First Place in the Youth 13 to 18 category was awarded to Philip Lee for his poem “Cultivate.” Philip lives in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey and attends Bergen County Technical High School, Teterboro Campus. He is the creative editor and a columnist for his school newspaper and has been a member of the school’s poetry club since freshman year. In college, he plans to major in the fields of nutrition and biochemistry with a minor in English or creative writing.

In the Youth 12 and Under category, First Place was awarded to Beckett Medwid, from Georgetown, Massachusetts, for his poem “Poetry Hides.” Along with writing, Beckett enjoys swimming, soccer, learning to play the trumpet and traveling with his family.

The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan international organization with consultative status to the United Nations. For 30 years, the Foundation’s mission has been to educate and advocate for peace and a world free of nuclear weapons, and to empower peace leaders.

Barbara Mandigo Kelly was a poet, pianist and peace advocate. She was married to Frank King Kelly, one of the founders of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation.
