Is it just me, or did the Monkees concert at the Arlington totally suck? I feel like the Monkees came into town and stole my, or shall I say anybody-who-bought-tickets’, money. I thought the acoustics were terrible; those guys sounded bad when they sang. The effort they put forth on stage was good, but I guess the memories I had as 12-year-old didn’t measure up to what I heard 45 years later. I’d like to think those guys just had a bad night, or the concert gods just conspired against them, but for some reason I don’t think so. What disappoints me the most is that those guys are professional musicians but they are more than willing to sell us a mediocre product. Oh well, it’s only hard-earned money, I’ll get over it. And worst part of the whole deal is they didn’t even play the “Hey, Hey, We’re The Monkees” song.

You do realize that people lose their voices well before 45 years after they started singing, right?

I say, chalk it up to experience. The acoustics at Arlington aren't the best and older bands are usually not going to be exactly what you remember them to have been at their peak, with rare exception.

Doobie Bros. are one of the rare exceptions that Native mentions. I saw them at the Chumash last time they played here. Incredibly fine tuned , good singing and harmonies , old stuff played fresh and superb guitar playing. I would definitely see them again after having had to be talked into even going in the first place.

Your first mistake was buying a ticket to see the monkees in concert. WIth the plethora of diverse talent available for consuming music today, why live in the past? Especially when it sounds so bad now. You should have stayed home and rented the movie 'Head', best thing they ever did.

I don't think the show totally sucked, but I was definitely underwhelmed. I caught the Chumash show last year and they totally rocked. It's not their age, but it just looked like they phoned it in. Or maybe Mike just phoned it in. And of course, the Arlington acoustics did not help. I'm just glad I have other shows to compare it to, otherwise I would be writing a review much like David Gilkeson's.
