The owners of Goleta’s Bacara Resort and Spa have dropped their plans to build 50 new condominiums and hotel units on 13 acres of restored coastal sage scrub habitat, the Environmental Defense Center announced in its October 3 newsletter. “Under new ownership since last year … the resort has recently been more proactive in reaching out to local community members, and the new owners graciously agreed not to pursue the application for the expansion project,” reads the newsletter, noting the 311-room resort generated significant controversy and opposition when it was built in 2000.
