UCSB Has Big Week in Soccer, Water Polo

Like golfers teeing off from a bunker, the runners in the SBCC Invitational cross country meet will start on the sand Friday (Oct. 12) at Leadbetter Beach. They will finish the races on the grass at Shoreline Park. The women’s race, covering 5 kilometers, starts at 3 p.m., and the men’s 4-miler starts at 4 p.m. Almost 20 community college teams will compete.

In Friday night football, SBCC’s defense will try to stop a high-powered Antelope Valley offense at La Playa Stadium. The host Vaqueros have allowed two touchdowns in their last three games, while the visiting Marauders scored 61 points last week – and lost to Canyons 62-61 in overtime. Santa Barbara has won three straight games and is 2-0 in the American Pacific Conference.

In high school action, Dos Pueblos tries to go to 2-0 in the Channel League at Ventura, while Buena seeks to do the same at San Marcos. Bishop Diego goes for its seventh straight win Saturday night against Santa Paula at La Playa Stadium.

UCSB’s nationally ranked (No. 8) men’s soccer team finds itself in third place in the North Division of the Big West after losing to Cal State Northridge last week. The Gauchos, 2-1-1 in the conference, are heading into two crucial games – Saturday at UC Davis (3-1-0), and Tuesday night at home against division leader Sacramento State (4-0-0).

The Gaucho water polo team puts its No. 2 ranking on the line at the Campus Pool against No. 5 Stanford on Saturday, and No. 3 UCLA on the following Saturday (Oct. 20).
