Santa Barbara Startup Wins DEMOgod Award
Birdeez, a location based iPhone app for identifying birds launched at DEMO Fall 2012 and was awarded a DEMOgod award. DEMO, sponsored this year by the Startup America Partnership, is world-renowned for launching the most innovative products in mobile, social media and disruptive technologies.
Birdeez was awarded a DEMOgod award for their innovative product and presentation. A DEMO first, the Birdeez team was accompanied on stage by a live falcon for their presentation.
Birdeez is the iPhone app that makes it quick and easy for anyone to identify birds, then collect and share their sightings. “The app works like magic by using your location to know what birds are around you. Then with a couple of taps you can choose the size, shape or color to quickly identify the bird you’ve seen,” says Jeff Simeon, CEO of EcoLek, the makers of Birdeez.
The Santa Barbara based startup grew out of the Technology Management Program and Bren School at UCSB. The group won it’s first startup competition at UCSB’s New Venture Competition in May of this year.
“Santa Barbara is a birding hotspot, with an active Audubon Society, so it is the perfect place for us to get started,” says Mr. Simeon.
