St. Raphael’s School
And, likewise, second-graders at St. Raphael’s School weren’t required to pile into a bus to get up-close-and-personal with the famous aquatic bird and his zookeeper.
Making the most of Santa Barbara Zoo’s new education program, FaceTime with Lucky, the second-grade class wrapped up their unit on penguins with a real-time, Q-&-A session using a 60” TV monitor, webcam, laptop and speakers provided by Jensen Audio Visual.
“I think the program is a great way to highlight our animals, and can be offered to any classroom setting that has access to the right equipment,” says Katie Holder, director of education at the Santa Barbara Zoo. FaceTime with Lucky came to fruition last year after a teacher outside of Dallas, who’d seen Lucky on national news, wanted to share his story with her class.
“What is great about (FaceTime with Lucky) is that it doesn’t take a ton of zookeeper time and we are able to provide the education to schools that might not otherwise have the means to get here,” adds Holder. In an age of school budget cuts, and less funding for fieldtrips, technology in the classroom is having a significant impact on education.
