The City Council is now accepting suggestions from the community on what to name the airport’s new terminal. At its July 23 meeting, the council received two name requests — Jack Rickard, a former mayor and judge, and Dwight Murphy, who served on the original committee that selected the airport site — but voted to delay any action. The City Council will resume its discussion on the matter October 30, and residents who wish to recommend a name should write a letter or send an email to the Airport Director by 5 p.m. on October 11.

Why does it need a person's name? What's wrong with "Santa Barbara Airport"?

My second to the proposal from Nockamixon. Otherwise we'll have another transitory political decision that may not stand the test of time.

Agreed; we don't need to lionize dubious personalities from the past, such as Rickard.
From an earlier Independent article, dutifully filed by Nick Welsh:
"...airport commission chair John Clarke reiterated his opposition to naming the terminal after anyone, arguing at least 18 other individuals could be deemed just as worthy as Rickard. He recounted how most people ask “Why?” and “Who?” when told there’s a campaign to name the terminal after Rickard. This prompted [Independent Editor Marianne] Partridge to reply, “That anyone could ask who — who — is Jack Rickard, we have a problem.”

I believe Rickard is an ancestor of Partridge-Poett's family (by marriage).

Santa Barbara Airport.
Why fix it if it's not broke?

And again we have comments from people who cannot comprehend the difference between Airport as the whole facility name, and the Airport Terminal, a particular building that always will be called the "terminal building" or "gate" or anything else but a commemorative name to memorialize someone who currently has a lot of cousins and a fan base.

"Houston, we have a problem." The problem is that I agree with italiansurg. :-)
It's the Santa Barbara Airport and the Santa Barbara Airport terminal building. Nobody knows who Richard Rush - or anybody else who might be in the running - is.
Can we get back to basics?

1. The Santa Barbara Airport: aka "The Airport" or "SBA"
2. The Terminal at SBA: aka "The Terminal"
3. Any Gate at The Airport: Hold on folks... aka "The Gate"
It's not rocket-science people (hello politicians? we're talking to you)... it already works as it is, we don't need to waste any further time, effort and money on this non-issue.

JA-I get the difference. I am not opposed to naming the terminal or a bathroom or a smoking area or an area to walk a dog for anyone they like as long as the entire facility is referred to as the Santa Barbara Airport. Now let's have Goleta annex back the property so they can have a say...
