With 2003’s cover album Dub Side of the Moon, the Easy Star All-Stars proved that, left together for seven (or more) minutes in heaven, classic 1970s prog rock and reggae could be fruitful and multiply. Genius arranger Michael Goldwasser, who has since taken on Radiohead with Radiodread (2006) and the Beatles with Easy Star’s Lonely Heart’s Dub Band (2009), has really hit his stride with Thrillah, a reggae interpretation of Michael Jackson’s 1982 classic Thriller. Highlights include Luciano’s “conscious” take on “Billie Jean” and a spunky, ebullient “P. Y. T. (Pretty Young Thing)” featuring Kirsty Rock’s vocals. Catch the Easy Star All-Stars at SOhO on Tuesday, September 18, and come prepared to skank the Thriller dance to perfectly looped melodica riffs.
