Two men allegedly responsible for two stabbings during an April 2012 party on the Mesa are headed to prison after reaching plea deals Tuesday afternoon.
Michael Hardy, 23, was sentenced to eight years in prison by Judge Clifford Anderson Tuesday, while Sean Crane, 24, will head to state prison for seven years when he is sentenced next month.
Both were involved in fights outside a party at 1037 Del Mar Avenue. Just before midnight on Friday, April 13, police arrived at the scene to find one victim in “extremely critical condition” from stab wounds. Another victim had also been stabbed, though he was in better condition.
Prosecutor Anthony Davis said an investigation revealed two fights unfolded outside the residence. A man named Devin Kelley was fighting with one of the victims, when Hardy approached and stabbed him, Davis said. Crane was fighting with a 41-year-old victim and stabbed him.
Crane left the party with Eddie Mesa, Davis said. According to police, witnesses helped identify the suspects, and authorities eventually tracked down all four. When police confronted Mesa, he originally lied about details of the case, Davis said.
Mesa, an active Marine whose deployment was delayed following his arrest, was originally charged with accessory after the fact, but a plea deal allowed him to plead to misdemeanor resisting arrest. He received credit for time served.
While Kelley was originally arrested in connection with the fight, he was not charged with a crime.
Hardy was originally charged with assault with a deadly weapon but pleaded Tuesday to assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, with a special allegation of committing an offense while out on bail. In March, he pleaded to assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury for a December 2011 attack. He was awaiting sentencing when the April stabbing occurred.
Crane was originally charged with attempted murder, which would have carried with it a maximum sentence of 10 years. He pleaded to assault with a deadly weapon and will be sentenced on October 29 to seven years in prison.
Davis said both victims are healing well, though the more serious stabbing incident almost ended in death. “To be quite honest, I think it’s a miracle he’s even alive,” Davis said. That victim, a 41-year-old man, was stabbed at least four times.

Wait a minute, wouldn't a gang enhancement or street terrorism charge increase that? Oh, wait, they are white, so exempt from that.

AZ, by white, do you mean not Latino? And, was this attack, in fact, gang related? Why don't y'all just come out and say what you really mean?

Yes, and if these would have been Latino or blacks with prison priors, and tattoos of a geographical area they would have been considered gang members or affliates and gotten at least 15-20 years if not life depending on their priors.

Too the contrary AZ, since gangs in this community are almost universally Latino they have themselves opted into the gang injunction. Once we have wide spread Caucasian(that means white) or Native American(red I guess) or Asian (yellow?) gangs in SB we can apply the injunction to them as well.

Yeah, join the gang since there are two latinos in there and us latinos are in universally in gangs. As for gangs being universally latino, err, wrong. What about NSS or North Side White Boys, skinheads, MC gangs, and the Cito Rats. The thing is that the laws aren't specific about who to target, but we all know who they do. According to the law a person who does crime for the benefit of a gang is gang related. The truth is that if you are latino or black, you are gang related because you know others who do associate with the gang, and you will most likely be hit with a gang charge even though your crime isn't gang related if ever involved in a scuffle. These guys worked together in a group to commit this crime and knucklehead with the throat tat proves that he "claims" this city as his turf. That is gang activity and gang association, well at least if you were a minority you would, in this case it's okay though.

Poor AZ, you really do have a victim mentality which is kinda sad and explains your inability to be honest. The gang injunctions are specifically targeted at organized groups of nitwits with court vetted criminal behavior. You just seem insecure that in this town, objectively, these idiots are mostly Latino and it is nobodies fault but their own.
RICO laws were enacted in this country to profile and stop folks from my home country. I don't hear anyone bitching about Italians being racially profiled or whining about fixing the incestuous culture that bred these sociopaths; certainly not me because the overwhelming majority of mobsters were and are Sicilian or Neopolitan and they have been the scourge of southern Italy and Sicily for hundreds of years.
Of course there are MINOR exceptions in SB to the gangs being Latino, but pointing out the exceptions proves the rule in this case and EVERYONE knows the gang bangers are brown. Sorry to inform you that the stereotype fits and is accurate.
You also need to understand the difference between merely being a thug/loser and doing these activities repeatedly as a part of a verified group. But again, intellectually you know that and the finger points directly at Latinos in this town which seems to upset you.

I mind that it is latinos engaging in ignorance, especially when I see a kid getting hurt for nothing except for living on the wrong side. What I don't mind, and I am sure you don't mind either is when the people who play the "game" get caught up in it, that includes those Italian mobsters you talk about. You keep bringing up the injunction, so I guess you want to talk about it right? No, I don't support something that takes away your rights or reputation on the word of a police officer. The reason we have the courts is because we cannot have one person making judgements that will change your whole life. Why can't they use simple laws like loitering, or even the good ole parole/probation violation to arrest some of these people? Was it necessary to spend all this money on a questionable tool that is targeting people who are going to be in jail for ever or probationees/parloees? Again, we are not talking about organized crime or even semi-organized gangs, the kind that RICO was targeting, if so the feds would have been all over that. We are talking about a group of people who are almost always caught on big crimes, and are not very sophisticated in their criminal behavior, yet you would like to give your rights and the rights of others up because the police have done a terrible job in controlling this problem, why? You are Italian, yet you forget the lessons Mussolini taught your people.

Is using Mussolini in an irrelevant manner the same as calling "Hitler" in a conversation? It is if you are talking to an Italian. What the hell does that have to do with our open and constitutional government? Are Latino jackasses being secretively brought into secret police stations and tortured into false confessions or just becoming among the desaparecidos? Get real and grow up.
The simple fact is that although I think RICO should not be constitutional, it is, albeit it was passed prior to my legal immigration to this country and the group they target are sociopaths.
I feel exactly the same about the Patriot Act which our current paragon of virtue President railed against and then re ratified.
There are a lot of laws that I feel should not be constitutional, both from the left and the right, but they are so I live with them.
And in this case blaming racism is a good excuse for selectively caring about a group of morons that have self identified, know the rules, and instead opt to continue to carry on their criminal lifestyle and very few of us feel sorry for them.
Finally, blaming the local police for a failed Federal policy to control illegal aliens and the failed family units that have allowed their kids to fall lock step (Hitler!) into a life which glorifies drugs and violent crime and being a moron is equally myopic.

So your response to something you are against is to follow the herd because the herder(s) said so? That is more pathetic than blaming me or a minority for all our problems. Also, not blaming the police or the government is also pathetic since they are the publics peacekeepers but fail to keep the peace. I mean why are they called PEACE officers? My reference to Mussolini is because he did persecute many people, and usually it was because of their refusal to obey or join him, so the people followed like a herd. Is it normal for you to look away when bad things happen or is that the Italian mindset?

I'm for the gang injunctions specifically because we have studiously observed the constitutional rights of these lowlifes beyond any reasonable doubt. I guess you just hate admitting that most of the criminals in this town are Latino.
If you can comprehend what you read you KNOW that I am against the Patriot Act because I think it is unconstitutional AND un American. The gang injunctions are constitutional, moral, and in the best spirit of Americans protecting themselves against criminals WITHOUT violating their rights.
Finally, I'll bet my skin tone is darker than yours.
Don't the facts just suck sometimes...

Studiously observed huh? How so? Let me rewind you to Rodney King and the riots that happened afterward, do you think that everyone really rioted because of what happened to Rodney or because those beatings and abuses are an everyday occurence? Do you really think that gangs are formed because there are huge group of people who are social degenerates or because the system alienates them? My problem with this case is that justice should be even to everyone, and if we are going to be using gang laws, then they should be used evenly not just on minorities. As far as latinos committing the majority of the crime, well, yes they get caught more, and they are no longer a minority in SB but the majority, so I can see why you see that, but who commits the larger crimes? I think you quoted some death row stats the other day on another post, so what race is predominant on death row? Who commits the majority of the frauds and white collar crimes?

It's funny that while sniffing my first can of paint this morning I was having the same thoughts about the DIRECT relationship between the idiots that burned down their own neighborhood after Rodney got beaten and the gang injunctions in Santa Barbara. I gotta get over to Home Improvement for some more spray cans to keep up my rigorous morning genius...
