Construction crews working on the Alma Del Pueblo mixed-use development on Chapala Street between Sola and Victoria punched a hole in a nearby gas line at around 1:45 p.m. this afternoon, said a City Fire spokesperson. The accident prompted the evacuation of the work site and surrounding outdoor areas, but the leak was plugged within 10 minutes and the situation quickly controlled. A few businesses in the 1300 block of State Street remain without gas, but service will be restored in the coming hour, said the spokesperson.

Good thought, but some times the utilities do not mark their lines correctly (like the city's recent fiber optic line break at Carrillo and Anacapa Streets).
