Santa Barbara’s homegrown street-biking daredevil Clint Ewing crashed during his attempt last week to break the world record for riding a motorcycle through a tunnel of fire. The stunt, which was part of the massive annual biker rally held in Sturgis, South Dakota, was on Wednesday, August 7, in front of a large crowd and national television cameras.

Ewing, 32, crashed his bike a little more than halfway toward the end of the more than 360-foot flaming tunnel, and suffered third degree burns that are requiring surgery at a burn clinic in Los Angeles. The motorcycle was charred and destroyed.

“All I can release is that he is under the care of a physician, and we will keep everyone updated,” said Ewing’s manager Sarah Shaw in an email. “Right now we are just focusing on getting him well.”

According to initial reports, the world record attempt, which Ewing first set in 2008, was rushed due to an incoming storm.
