Sports Highlights: February 19-March 5

Basketball, Soccer Playoffs Continue

Several local teams survived the first week of the CIF Southern Section Ford winter sports playoffs. On Tuesday, Feb. 19, Dos Pueblos hosts No. 4 seed Elsinore in the second round of Division 2A boys basketball, while San Marcos travels to No. 3 seed Corona Del Mar in the 3AA quarterfinals.

Santa Barbara High is two games away from the Division 1 girls water polo title. The top-ranked Dons will face Newport Harbor in the semifinals on Wednesday. Second-ranked Foothill, which held off San Marcos 13-5 in the quarterfinals, will take on Corona Del Mar in the other semi. Both games, as well as Saturday’s final, will take place in Irvine.

Playoff teams at home Wednesday include Santa Barbara in Division 1 boys soccer and Providence Hall’s Division 6 girls basketball team, which plays at Westmont College. Santa Barbara plays at Atascadero in a 3AA quarterfinal.

College baseball is under way. UCSB and nationally ranked UCLA were scheduled to meet Tuesday in the Gauchos’ home opener, but because of the forecast of rain, the game has been rescheduled to February 26. The Gauchos, who took two out of three at Fresno State over the weekend, will host San Francisco in a four-game series starting Friday.

The two-time defending Major League Soccer champion Los Angeles Galaxy will face the Colorado Rapids in a preseason match at UCSB’s Harder Stadium on Friday night, Feb. 22. The Rapids reserves will play UCSB’s men in a preliminary match. It’s the second night of MLS action at UCSB’s “Soccer Heaven.” On Feb. 9, the Chicago Fire defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0, and UCSB played the Fire’s reserves to a 1-1 draw. Adult tickets to the soccer matches cost $12 while children’s tickets (ages 4-13) cost $8 through
