Surfrider Foundation’s flags will be flying along State Street in a salute to the organization’s global network of grassroots chapters and volunteer activists.
Following a six-year wait list, the Santa Barbara Chapter of Surfrider Foundation is proud to be joining the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization’s “State Street Flag Program”! The flags, gradating two different shades of bright blue on white, are emblazoned with the new logo of the Surfrider Foundation. The flags will be flown February 15th through February 28th.
The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 50,000 members and 90 chapters worldwide.
The Santa Barbara chapter, founded in 1992, is a local, all-volunteer ocean and watershed environmental group, comprised of surfers and non-surfers alike, working on public access issues, beach clean-ups, school outreach programs, and protecting the local beaches, water quality and coastal open spaces that all Santa Barbarans love.
Currently, the chapter is producing a film about the Gaviota coast with filmmaker Scott Walker’s Highliner Studios entitled “The Twenty” (thetwenty.org). The film highlights the Chapter’s 20 year mission to protect the last 20 miles of undeveloped coastline in southern California and the beautiful spaces that comprise this threatened area.
To celebrate the State Street flags, the chapter is inviting members and the public to a party at Wahoo’s Fish Taco at 511 State Street, on Friday, February 22 from 6-9p.m. Food and beer specials, plus live music with local talent Sheenie Smith, will mark the event.
