Sports Highlights: February 28-March 12

Westmont College (25-3) will face Vanguard (22-3) on Tuesday evening (March 5) in the championship game of the GSAC women’s basketball tournament at Concordia University in Irvine. The Warriors defeated San Diego Christian 62-47 in the semifinals. In the men’s tournament, Concordia outlasted Westmont in the semifinals, 80-77.

Westmont College hopes to double the number of postseason basketball games at Murchison Gym this weekend. At 7:30 p.m. today (Thu., Feb. 28), the Warriors (24-6) will face San Diego Christian (7-16) in the opening round of the Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tournament. If Westmont wins, it will host both semifinal games Saturday at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The Warriors would play the latter game. They are the top-seeded team in the tournament, but San Diego’s No. 8-seeded Hawks upset them in El Cajon on February 2.

Westmont will also host San Diego Christian in the GSAC women’s semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Friday. A victory will enable the Warrior women (24-3) to defend their tournament championship on Tuesday at Concordia University in Irvine. They went undefeated in regular season conference games and have won their last 16 games. Friday night’s game will have a “Think Pink” theme in support of the Kay Yow Foundation.
