The public is invited to attend “CPR for Family & Friends,” a class for family members, friends and caregivers to learn specific “HeartSaver” CPR techniques to be used on children ages 0-8 years old. The class will be held at Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital (SYVCH) on Monday, July 29, 2013, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. in the front conference room at the hospital located at 2050 Viborg Road in Solvang (enter through the Physicians Clinic entrance which is the door to the left of the hospital’s main lobby).

Based on American Heart Association guidelines for the lay public, the HeartSaver course covers CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) and choking prevention for children under the age of eight years. This course is appropriate for non-professional family members, friends, caregivers, teachers and any lay person who wants to learn these skills. Participants must be over the age of 10 years and will receive a course completion card upon successfully finishing the class.

Class instructor is Tina Collins, RN, MSN, ICCE, who has worked in patient education with Cottage Health System for more than 30 years and has extensive knowledge of these critical life skills. Collins remarked, “Anyone who wants to learn the special techniques necessary to help young children should attend. What you discover in three hours could rescue a child’s life.”

The course fee is $20.00 per person and pre-registration is required by July 24, 2013. Participants must be over 10 years of age. Please register by calling (805) 569-8229 to receive a form by mail or visit www.cottagehealthsystem.org/tabid/968/Default.aspx#infant to download the form and then mail in payment.
