Fire Season Blues

Responding to news of a firefighter furlough throughout a fire season not predicted to be slow.

Last week I thanked the men

As they drove home to rest.

I waved thanks to men and women

Who put the White Fire to rest.

Didn’t see those sequestration cuts

coming to stab the backs of the best.

I heard this season would be big -

Thought that was due to Mother Nature.

I heard this season will be big,

Now bolstered by human nature.

Wish logic was required for a gig

In our legislature.

Mother Nature, please be kind.

Give us fog to cool the flames.

Human Nature, please be kind.

Keep dimwits from making flames.

Ain’t going to find my peace of mind

‘Til I ain’t a piece in some game.
