Hall and Oates

There’s no city like New Orleans, and, in a city that has a festival for everything, there’s no festival like JazzFest. Its seven days of music span two long weekends every spring, bringing people from all over to the city’s fairgrounds, where musicians of every stripe take to the nine stages. From zydeco to punk, rock to reggae, gospel to blues, and, yes, jazz, the lineup is as rich and disparate as the crowd, and the city itself.

And then there’s the weather. This year saw thunderstorms, wind, perfectly sunny days, and plenty of mud. No matter: wellies are as ubiquitous here as seersucker, straw hats, and fleur de lis tattoos, and no bout of rain was about to put a dent in this party.

Below, Independent photographer Tom Long turns his lens on JazzFest 2013. Check out the faces, musical acts, and storms that made 2013 one for the books.
