Congratulations to Santa Barbara City College’s two programming teams, SBCC One and SBCC Alpha. The two teams competed in the 2013 Southern California Regionals for the International Collegiate Programming Competition (ICPC) on Saturday November 9th in Riverside, CA.

SBCC One won honors as the Top Scoring Two Year College in the competition. The team, consisting of Joel Green, Erwan Lent, and Ben Rhoda, ranked 14th overall, scoring higher than all teams from UCSB, USD, CSULB, CSUCI, Chapman, CSULA, LMU, CSUF, UNLV, Asuza Pacific, and others. This is the third year of the last four that SBCC has been ranked top two year college.

SBCC Alpha, consisting of Andrea Brenner-Billet, Shawn Leavy, and Sean Sutherland, also competed successfully, outranking teams from UCSB, UC Riverside, and CSU Fullerton.

The ICPC challenges three-person student teams to solve a set of eight programming problems in five hours. This year, 91 teams from 30 institutions in the Souther California area competed, including: Cal Tech, Harvey Mudd, USC, UCSD, Cal Poly SLO, UCLA, SBCC, CSU Channel Islands, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, and others. The overall winner, from the University of Southern California solved eight problems in five hours. USC and UCI will compete in the ICPC World Finals to be held in Ekaterinburg, Russia in 2014. SBCC’s success in pitting themselves against students from world-class universities is a testament to the hard work, determination, and intellect of our students. And special thanks go out to the Computer Science faculty (Rob Dependahl, Jackie Kuehn, Dean Nevins, Stephen Strenn) and TA’s (Soheyla Javanbakht and James Howard) for their guidance and support.
