South of Santa Barbara,

It ain’t quite “Paradise”

Slam on the brakes — A Glaze in one’s eyes.

Thirty-mile commute can take two hours

As bumper-gnashing, car devours

Our own “Carmageddon” stretching for miles

Between Carp and Ventura no one smiles.

Up past Goleta, it can start slowing down

Heading south, outta town.

Ditto from that end heading north

No one escapes — for what it’s worth.

Fifty years ago, the “Powers that Be”

Unveiled their plans for us to see —

A brand new hi-way they proposed

Never envisioned the traffic that eventually arose.

Fifty years on, it’s waaay outdated,

To drive it now — ya gotta be sedated!
