Surf Beach here will open Saturday to beachgoers after a being closed since June 6 to enforce protection of the Western Snowy Plover breeding season.

A temporary closure that began Apr. 10, was intended to refocus attention on the rules, emphasize that they are not optional, and that violations carry real consequences for not only violators, but also impacts those who follow the rules. On May 1, base officials reopened the beach only to have the number of violations surpass the threshold and force closure of the beach until the end of the nesting season.

“We have nearly 42 miles of coastline to protect and safeguard at all times,” said Col. Jed Davis, 30th Mission Support Group commander. “Whether it is our Security Forces members providing security or our environmentalists protecting our endangered species, we take pride in our installation. We would love to see beachgoers, both Vandenberg members and community members, enjoy the beach every day of the year, but we must adhere to the rules set before us in order to do that.”

As a reminder to our beachgoers, some beach rules include:

-No littering (including fishing bait and fish remains). Please use trash containers located at beach entry points.

-No pets off-leash

Sept. 26, 2013

-No camping

-No beach fires

-No fireworks

-No kite flying

-No feeding wildlife

-No horses or ATV’s (except for authorized enforcement personnel)

Lifeguards are not present at Surf Beach so remember to never swim alone and be cognizant of your surroundings for safety.
