[Santa Barbara, CA] The non-profit Santa Barbara Bridge Center is adding to its class schedule and game schedule to provide more opportunities for people to learn and play bridge build their skills and improve their minds. There will be opportunities to play bridge in a fun and social setting as well as multiple duplicate bridge games. In addition, the Center is now planning for a new novice game for beginning and returning players only.

Bridge is played with a standard deck of 52 playing cards and four players comprised of two partnerships. There are social forms of bridge as well as duplicate. Duplicate bridge differs from other forms of contract bridge because the same bridge deal (i.e., the specific arrangement of the cards into the four hands) is played at each table and scoring is based on relative performance. In this way, every hand, whether strong or weak, is played in competition with others playing identical cards, and the element of skill is heightened while that of chance is reduced. The Center will now be offering both duplicate and HomeStyle play.

Studies have shown that engaging the brain in mental gymnastics through activities like playing bridge leads to a healthy mind. And once you learn, you do not forget. Whether you are young or older, learning bridge will not only give you the opportunity for fun but will also provide an avenue to exercise your brain. Just ask bridge players Warren Buffet and Bill Gates!

Classes and games are now ongoing with more being added. Duplicate games are held every day but Sunday. The first “Home Style” Saturday Night Bridge Party will be April 26, and a new novice game is in the planning stages.
