Sports Highlights: Aug. 22-31


UCSB and Westmont College open their men’s soccer seasons on Saturday night, Aug. 23, as the stage their annual crosstown skirmish for Bryant & Sons Cup. The match is slated to start at 7 pm at Harder Stadium.

The host Gauchos kick off the season with great expectations after being the unanimous choice to win the Big West Conference North Division in the coaches’ poll released this week. Sophomore midfielder Ismaila Jome is a preseason All-America selection and one of 32 players placed on the watch list for the Hermann Award, the Heisman Trophy of college soccer.

From 2:30-6:30 pm Sunday, UCSB’s AYSO Skills Day will take place at Harder Stadium. The clinic is free to all AYSO affiliated players, coaches and parents.

High school football teams are a week away from their season-opening games on Friday, Aug. 29.
