Galen Avery, an original member of the hard-charging Montecito party crew of the early 1980s known as the “Cito Rats,” died last week at Cottage Hospital after suffering an undisclosed “medical event” while in custody at the county jail. A confirmed alcoholic, Avery also worked the past 15 years at the bait shop by the city’s waterfront where he was both well-known and well-liked. Avery was homeless because of his drinking, and had multiple run-ins with law enforcement over public inebriation. It remains uncertain what happened to Avery while in county jail; one account suggests he may have had a seizure, fell from his bunk, and split his skull.

According to Kelly Hoover, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, Avery was booked into jail by Santa Barbara police officers on June 20 for an outstanding arrest warrant and assigned to dorm style housing in the main jail. Two days later, shortly after midnight, he suffered what Hoover described as a “medical event.” Twenty-five minutes later, he was transferred to an observation cell, where Hoover said he was checked twice every 30 minutes by jail staff and medical personnel. Upon the recommendation of medical personnel, Avery was transferred to Cottage Hospital eight hours later. On July 5, he died.

Thank goodness the Indy puts stories of loser ex-entitled partiers from the 80s on their front page.

And thank goodness Nick has a place to write about old memories he had about the C-Rats.

And really thank goodness that other hard working, honest, and unknown Santa Barbarans who died yesterday were not written about on the front page of the Indy.

Wow, what a sad ending after a life of addiction. Not sure if this guy had family but I am sure it was hard on them if he did. Poor decisions.

I would say jail staff might want to pull their heads out and be a little more proactive and cautious with regards to diagnosing head trauma.

Thank goodness the Santa Barbara Independent is independent and discloses what might otherwise be swept under the rug.

These ding dongs called the cito rats, nothing but a bunch of failed trust fund kiddies.
All they were known for was getting hammered then getting in fights. of course, like their gang brethren, they could never fight 1 on 1, it had to be the whole pack of them against 1 person.
Saw these jackasses in Isla Vista at parties where certain bands (RKL, Dahmer's Icebox, Threatened Hope, Latch Key Kids, Soup Kitchen, et al) were playing.
A bunch of punk poseurs funded by rapidly dwindling trust funds, driving expensive mommy-daddy purchased cars and doing whatever drugs they could get their paws on. Realitycheck88 nailed it.

Galen was not from a rich family. There was no "Trust Fund" for him. He and his brother were locals at the Biltmore Pier and Butterfly Beach, back in the early 80s.
Montecito had working class families living there in those days, people who worked in the area.
Of course he could have done better for himself by not drinking, but Alcoholism is self perpetuating, the more you drink, the more you want to drink. the more you need to drink. and he was in very deep in that respect. He was convinced he might die from withdrawals from alcohol, so he drank 24/7 and that can only lead to disaster, and it did. He did survive an amazing number of years on mostly beer for breakfast lunch and dinner

Well, blahblahmoreblah....You are such an idiot. You have no idea who Galen was or the kind of friend he was. Yes he had a drinking problem, but guess what ! so do millions of others in the world as well.
For you to make a moronic statement about Galen and the Cito Rats as "a bunch of failed trust fund kiddies" is completely Wrong ! You must be a Goleta Squid with no real friends. It sounds like you are actually jealous !! Galen Was a True friend and you could always count on him when you needed him. And what do you know about Punk Rock ?? have you ever been in a band ?? My guess is not ! RKL was a true Cito based band that went on to tour the world and had true musical talent ! Galen came from a middle class family and never was handed anything ! he worked for what he had and to disrespect him when you knew nothing about him just shows what a jealous person you are . Get a life and go back to Goleta !!

The negative comments here speak more to the source rather than to Galen, bitter losers. Galen in all his hell would never trade lives with you. Blahblah Goleta/IV loser jealous that the Cito Rats always had the best looking girls in town. Apparently you never found one, still sitting in Goleta dive bars complaining about life and spending way too much time posting negative crap on the Internet. What were you doing at an RKL gig if you hated Cito Rats! Jason Sears and Galen were bros. How about a little Galen RIP. It was good knowing you. Never did anything wrong by me. I'm sure Blah surfs about as good as he has done with the ladies.

Some pretty cheap shots taken at Galen here from people who didn't know him or grow up in Cito.
How about you put aside your agenda and have a little respect for someone who has passed away instead of making Galen's many friends feel even worse.
Proud to have grown up in Cito and no, I didn't have a trust fund.

Wow, sad this turned into a Cito vs Goleta thing. trustfundkid-LOL! Sadly I think this is more about addiction that geographic location. If anything good can come out of it, it maybe some of the people he ran with will take head and make some changes if they need to. Too many people dying early around here for such a nice place we live in.

So sad. RIP Galen. He did survive a long time living the way he lived. I'll always remember him, his heart, his voice, his stories. He was a huge part of my life during a time long ago back on the Mesa. I'll never forget him. Sad sad sad. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Xoxoxo Galen Avery. Until we meet again.

RIP Galen and condolences from an old school, original Mesa Rat. <3

This really makes me wonder what the County jail's training and procedure is for handling drug and alcohol withdrawal. Whether or not one agrees with the circumstances of being an addict or alcoholic, undeniably withdrawl can be lethal and requires both prevtative and proactive treatment. Leaving one untended to the point of seizure while incarcerated can legally be seen as culpable. It will be interesting to see what comes out of the investigation.
