Tony Vallejo  — an accountant who formerly chaired the Goleta Valley Chamber of Commerce, served as treasurer for Roger Aceves’s bid for 2nd District Supervisor, and recently expressed interest in running for council — was appointed to the Goleta City Council on 6/17. Vallejo beat out six other candidates for the position, which came about after Ed Easton resigned in May; Vallejo will hold the seat through 2016. He called the job “a great responsibility and a lot of work” — he supports revitalizing Old Town and ending the city’s tax-sharing deal with the county — and said he was “deeply, deeply honored” to be chosen.

I indeed, he (and his candidate Mr. Aceves) may be honored, but those voters who chose Mr. Easton and what he stood for are dishonored by this Chamber of Commerce choice.

Uh, and Mr. Easton resigned and moved out of the city. Now they picked the best candidate, and it's only to serve out the remaining term.

Best candidate? Best for who? Based on what? The majority picked a man who seems to be a very nice guy, but a guy who was President of the Chamber of Commerce, was Roger Aceves' treasurer in his failed supervisor attempt, has no land use or other local government experience, was the only person to support Venoco at a recent hearing, and according to his interview about this appointment would have supported McDonald's drive through and wants to appoint another Goleta Chamber person to the Planning Commission to replace the person who was Ed Easton's appointment. None of this is in keeping with what Easton did or stood for after he was elected. And even though Mr. Vallejo's appointment is "only to serve out the remaining term" a whole lot of damage can and will be done to Goleta during that term. Good luck Goleta. The Goodland's on the way out!
