Twenty-six employees of the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office, led by their team captains, Investigators Robert Lowry and Patrick Adams, announce their first-time participation in the annual Challenge Cup/Baker to Vegas relay race, or, as it’s commonly referred to, the “Baker 2 Vegas.” The event, beginning March 22, 2014, is a 120-mile relay race starting just outside Baker, California, and ending in Las Vegas, Nevada. This 120-mile course travels along state highways and local roadways, presenting all runners with some of the most challenging terrain and weather conditions. 2014 is the 30th year anniversary for this event but the first time the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office will be participating.

The race is designed to promote teamwork, camaraderie, physical fitness, and competition. Baker 2 Vegas is the premier law enforcement relay race in California and arguably within the United States and internationally. This year approximately 264 teams from around the world will compete. There are federal, state, and local agencies of various sizes competing in the event. This year participating teams include: Hamburg, Germany, as well as teams from Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado; the majority of teams from California include the District Attorney’s Offices from Orange County, Fresno County, Riverside County, San Diego County, and Los Angeles County. Santa Barbara District Attorney Joyce Dudley is the only known California District Attorney running in the race and is doing so in an effort to raise emergency funds for Santa Barbara County’s crime victims and has thus far raised $1,711. No county funds or resources are being used to support this event.

To offset some team expenses the Santa Barbara District Attorney’s Office received donations from the Deputy District Attorneys Association of Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara Deputy Sheriff’s Association. Additionally, several other Santa Barbara agencies and businesses directly supported Santa Barbara County’s crime victims with their generous donations and include the following:

• Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast Troop 50762

• Northern Santa Barbara County Bar Association

• Santa Maria Legal Professionals Association

• Co Motion Media

• Thrifty Car Rental

• Central Coast Access Specialists, LLC

• Ferrel’s Chiropractic
