Kiraly Brings U.S. Volleyball Women to Sports Pavilion

UPDATE: There will be two CIF quarterfinal boys volleyball matches in town Saturday – San Marcos hosting Long Beach Poly at 5 pm, and Santa Barbara taking on El Segundo at 6 pm. Both the Royals and Dons swept their second-round matches, while the Dos Pueblos Chargers were ousted in four sets by Lakewood.

The boys volleyball teams of San Marcos, Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara High Schools all swept their opening-round matches in the CIF/Ford Division 2 playoffs and will move into the second round tonight (Thurs., May 15). Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos will host their matches, while top-seeded San Marcos travels to Oaks Christian in Thousand Oaks.

Women’s volleyball comes to the SBCC Sports Pavilion on Friday when Karch Kiraly returns to his hometown as coach of the U.S. national team and puts it through an intrasquad scrimmage. Kiraly will meet the public in a Q&A session at 4:45 p.m. preceding the match.

SBCC swept two consecutive Southern Cal Regional baseball series and will travel to Oxnard this weekend for a best-of-three playoff that will send the winner to the State Final Four in Fresno. The Vaqueros (27-13) are seeded third while Oxnard (31-10) is No. 2. Vaquero catcher Paddy O’Brien, hitting .462 in the postseason, recently accepted a scholarship offer from UCSB.

Saturday, 5/17: Track and field – CIF Division 4 Prelims at Carpinteria, 11 am. Swimming – CIF Finals at Riverside CC, 11 am. Boys volleyball – CIF quarterfinals: Long Beach Poly at San Marcos, 5 pm; El Segundo at Santa Barbara, 6 pm.


Friday, 5/16: Baseball – Southern Cal Sectional: SBCC at Oxnard, 2 pm. UCSB at San Francisco, 3 pm.

Saturday, 5/17: Baseball – Southern Cal Sectional: SBCC at Oxnard, 1 pm. UCSB at San Francisco, 1 pm.

Sunday, 5/18: Baseball – Southern Cal Sectional (if necessary): SBCC at Oxnard, 12 pm. UCSB at San Francisco, 1 pm.
