A 19-year-old man who reportedly strangled his girlfriend and seriously beat a 5-month-old puppy was arrested this Tuesday. On May 14, officers responded to a veterinary hospital after an employee called the police because she noticed multiple suspicious injuries on a Miniature Pinscher that had been brought in for treatment. The puppy had suffered broken bones, cuts and burns, and wounds on its rectum and genitals. Police said the dog will likely have to be euthanized.

On Tuesday, police arrested Duanying Chen — a Chinese citizen here on a student visa — for domestic battery and animal cruelty after an investigation identified him as the suspect. According to police spokesperson Sgt. Riley Harwood, the investigation indicated Chen strangled his 21-year-old girlfriend — also a student — after a heated argument. The victim told police she nearly lost consciousness and later suffered pain in her neck. The two live together on Monterey Street.

The victim also told police she returned home one night after being gone all day to find the puppy hiding underneath a table, unable to walk, with the aforementioned injuries. Chen reportedly told his girlfriend the puppy had fallen off of a ping-pong table. On Tuesday, detectives obtained a felony arrest warrant for Chen and booked him in County Jail on $75,000 bail. Yesterday, Chen posted bail. He appeared in court on Thursday for arraignment, but the case was continued until June 20.

We should make kids in the US go to school from 7am - 11pm like in China, they would be so much more disciplined and maybe his girlfriend wouldn't have acted so out of line to cause him to strangle her.

I know who this kid is. He is a total psychopath, and the girl in question is suffering serious Stockholm Syndrome. He has been highly abusive, stolen from her, assaulted her, threatened her friends and used her money. When I heard what he did to the poor dog the other day I was outraged. A mutual friend found the situation and insisted on going to the vet and police. Domestic violence and abuse is always a horrible situation.

I hope his visa gets revoked and he gets deported for everyone's sake. The prosecutor better not let him off with a plea bargain. Get this trash out of here, ideally after he spends some time in jail.

Good grief - just because one person behaves like this, you would tar and feather all students and would punish them based on this person's behavior - regardless of their stellar performance in this country. Btw, the best education practices and results are in the Nordic countries.

Also, long hours of education and homework can stifle creativity and inventiveness and independence. I guess that is why so many countries like to steal ideas from this one. Elon Musk had after-school hours to work on his own projects - as did many of those who developed computer and other technology in this country.

Get some perspective.

"you're insulting, racist, culturally insensitive, self-righteous, arrogant and ignorant. please leave us alone."

No, I am none of those things and you are simply ignorant to the intent of my posting. Maybe you should ask instead of being so presumptuous.

It had nothing to do with race. It was completely sarcastic and meant to imply that keeping children in what is essentially a prison for the majority of their waking young lives in order to instill discipline is not the most healthy environment. I'm very simply opposed to compulsory education. And Chinese people. Just kidding.

OK, I'll sacrifice what little popularity I enjoy and come to Loon's defense. I saw the bitter sarcasm in Loon's post and while none of us know what caused this guy to turn into what he has, there is the reality that Asian culture puts incredible pressure on itself to succeed.

While I think this guy is a defective unit, the "all work and no play" approach we see in some Asian cultures is probably why suicide rates are high in that demographic if one doesn't succeed. Also, women in China are not exactly held in as high regard and in most Western cultures. Each culture has it's advantages--and disadvantages--and kudos to Loon for having the backbone to raise the subject.

Bill, I also agree.
China's Animal food products have been pulled from all store shelves for the amount poison they put in their animal product to kill owners pets. I am NOT surprised that Mr. Chen is cruel and torturous to the Puppy, think about all the animals that Chinese animal products kill per year.

Note that he posted bond. I have Chinese international students as tenants. These guys have bucks. (Daddy's of course) The big problem I had with them is they kept hogging the parking lot with their BMWs and Bentleys. But they always pay their rent!

They can also do that kind of stuff in China with impunity. But they find out quickly that the rules are different here.

This from Edhat, "Examination however revealed injuries consistent with abuse, rather than a fall; the animal was suffering from multiple broken bones, multiple lacerations and burns, neurological damage, and wounds to its rectum and genitals."

This guy is a psychopath, the system should control him before he becomes "Serial", doesn't matter where on this planet he comes from, he is defective and I doubt will ever be rehabilitated. Only a very very sick mind would do that to any living creature.

Yes agreed howgreen. I think that in profiles of serial killers they often see if the person of interest has a history of animal cruelty. Sounds like he has almost started to escalate by the way he treats his "girlfriend". Get him out of here.

The problem is that these guys have money so they think it is okay to act the way they do in their culture here in America. They can probalby buy their way ot of toruble where their from, but for the most part, not here

Ya he should know if he wants to break the law with impunity here in America then he needs to become a cop.

Save other dogs and young women, do not deport him immediately. Treat him like any other resident (and as any other offender, although this DA does not take animal abuse seriously enough), and, if found guilty, (no plea bargains!) let him enjoy jail. ...It will be interesting to see if the Chinese consulate will appear to defend him.

Keep him here, prosecute him, and if he's found guilty, throw the book at him. Send the message around the world that if you come here and do this, you don't get a free pass to go back to your homeland.
