Dos Pueblos freshman Bella Vigna, pictured, and Megan Caird led the Chargers on Tuesday at Glen Annie Golf Course.

The first time Dos Pueblos and San Marcos met this season, the undefeated Chargers escaped with a one-stroke victory over their crosstown foes. Dos Pueblos avoided another scare in Tuesday’s rematch at Glen Annie Golf Course and secured a 188-227 victory that clinched the Channel League title outright. The Chargers, still undefeated on the season at 14-0, have won 17 straight league titles.

“It’s a proud tradition,” said Chargers head coach Rob Schiff. “The cool thing is the streak’s been alive longer than some of [the players] have.”

The team score of 188 was DP’s season low at Glen Annie. “We felt like they played well the first time around and we really didn’t. We were kind of lucky to get away with a victory,” Schiff said. “So we just felt like we needed to play a much smoother round today and that’s what we did.”

Freshman Bella Vigna and defending individual league champion Megan Caird led the Chargers with 34s. Vigna shot all pars and one birdie while Caird recorded two birdies and a bogey.

“I missed a few putts that I should have made and I wasn’t hitting great,” said Vigna, who holds DP’s lowest score of the year (31). “I think overall my course management was pretty good.”

Not only did San Marcos miss out on sharing the league title, but the 227 was two strokes off a CIF qualifying score needed to advance to the postseason. The Royals have three more chances to get two such scores. “I thought we prepared well to play this course. We knew where to hit, what to do, but just didn’t execute,” said Royals head coach Sarah Ashton.

Schiff said the first San Marcos match was a turning point for the Chargers.

“Since then we’ve put the nose to the grindstone a little bit,” he explained. “Just get working, focus a little bit better. We’ve played better golf since then.”
