Goleta’s Police Department will be staking out an area with a higher than usual frequency of impaired drivers Friday night between 7 p.m. and 3:30 a.m. Sheriff’s spokesperson Kelly Hoover explained that the goal is both to raise the public’s awareness of the impacts of driving impaired and also to increase safety. Alcohol, licit or illicit drugs, or a combination of both can decrease a driver’s ability to react to unanticipated hazards. A 0.8 percent blood alcohol level can net a driving-under-the-influence arrest, as can being under the influence of drugs such that the physical or mental ability to drive is impaired.

As well as designated drivers and taxi cabs to get the less-than-sober home again safely, Bill’s Bus offers rides ($10 round-trip, $7 one way) to and from Isla Vista Thursday-Saturday.
