UCSB’s fall quarter starts a week later this year, and winter vacation is a week shorter, because of a system-wide policy that seeks to address a conflict between dorm “move-in” days and Jewish holidays. Classes start October 2 and break on December 19, making winter vacation just two weeks instead of three. Rosh Hashanah, which begins this year on September 24, is about three weeks later than it was last year. Yom Kippur lands this year on October 3 and 4.

The new policy was issued seven years ago after Jewish families complained that the move-in days at the residence halls were on the same days as the religious holiday. The adapted schedule is consistent at all UC campuses that are on the quarter system.
