Chancellor Gets a Raise

UCSB Chancellor Henry Yang was awarded a 20 percent raise this week, bringing him to $398,340 in base pay. Yang, who previously made $324,450, has worked at the university for 20 years and is one of the lowest paid chancellors in the system, along with chiefs at Merced, Irvine, and Riverside. The UC Regents approved pay increases for four university execs in an attempt to even out the pay scale. The highest paid official is UC San Francisco Chancellor Sam Hawgood, who makes $651,100 in total pay, according to Transparent California. UC President Janet Napolitano said in a report on chancellor compensations that the system needs to pay its chancellors such rates in light of the “dynamic market for university leaders of this caliber.” Critics argued the funds should be used for other resources.
