I applaud Barney Brantingham’s column on S.B. traffic. I write, I speak, I attend “coffee with a cop” sessions, but conditions worsen.

Lately we have had — very occasionally — police on bikes, but they are almost always together, entertaining each other. Same for motorcycle police. Lately, downtown, we have had “uniformed” young people who are pleasant enough but ornamental. Lots of money is spent on meter maids and their vehicles, but little concern is shown for pedestrians.

Where is our collective sense of priorities? Do crime scenes, car chases, parking, and TV productions preclude police control of traffic, especially in the center of the city, where accidents are common? Let’s get the police on the beat, where they belong, doing prevention.
