Car Crash Injures Four Students

Four elementary school-aged children standing in front of Alice Shaw Elementary School in Orcutt Tuesday morning were injured after a dark blue sedan crashed into them. County firefighters, Santa Maria City firefighters, the CHP, and Sheriff’s deputies responded at approximately 11:47 a.m., said County Fire Captain David Zaniboni.

The sedan, driven by an elderly woman, had gone over the sidewalk and crashed into a flagpole before hitting the four children at the elementary school’s 759 Dahlia Place campus near Hill View Road. One male child suffered moderate injuries but remained conscious when a CALSTAR (California Shock Trauma Air Rescue) helicopter landed in a field adjacent to the school to take him to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. “He was actually [trapped] under the vehicle for some time,” according to Zaniboni.

Three other children suffered “very minor injuries,” said Zaniboni. They were medically evaluated on scene and were all picked up by their parents. The driver was shaken up, but suffered no injuries herself. The CHP stayed on scene to investigate the reason for the car crash.
