Reports of Gunshot in Goleta

Santa Barbara Sheriff’s deputies are investigating reports of a gunshot heard in the area of Phelps and Canon Green roads in Goleta.

A UCSB alert sent shortly before noon states “a male possibly holding a rifle was seen walking south towards the ocean. The male was described as wearing dark long sleeve shirt and dark pants.” People are advised to avoid the area until further notice. If they are already in the area, they are asked to stay inside and call 9-1-1 if they see anything suspicious.

[UPDATE, 2:00 p.m.]: Kelly Hoover, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, said this morning’s reports were unfounded and that there is no threat in the area. She did not provide any additional information.
