Shauna Klien’s article on Sand Volleyball at UCSB asks the same question I have asked many times. UCSB of all universities would be a logical place for a Sand Volleyball team. I guess it all comes down to money. I know that San Marcos High is currently seeking donations to establish a team and is about half way to their goal of raising $110,000 to build their courts.

I graduated from one of the premier universities that established Sand Volleyball as a college sport. Florida State University (FSU) is known as “The Beast of the East” in Sand Volleyball circles. Recently FSU hired a new coach for the program, Brooke Niles, a UCSB All-American Volleyball Player. She calls her appointment as head coach her dream job. She has already fallen in love with Tallahassee (as most athletes and coaches do).

Hopefully the new Athletic Director at UCSB will realize how valuable this sport could be . If San Marcos can do it, so can UCSB.

Go Noles! Go Gauchos!
