A 55-year-old man was rescued after he became separated from his kayak on the evening of Monday, July 20. While kayaking alone off Santa Claus Lane Beach, a rogue wave knocked the man from his kayak and he swam towards land. That evening, the man’s wife reported his absence to 911, and a Coast Guard response ship and helicopter were sent in search of him. At 9:30 p.m., Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SBCSAR) dispatched 14 volunteers in search of the missing kayaker, and at 11:50 p.m. found his unattended kayak floating east of Lookout Park County Beach. At 12:20 a.m., the man was found in good condition — with only minor cuts on his feet — on the rocks beneath the Loon Point cliffs.
